Best Bike Routes in Madrid for Every Type of Rider

Madrid is surprisingly flat for a European capital. That means almost anyone can ride here, but the real joy comes from picking a route that matches your mood and fitness level.
The Classic Highlights Loop (Easy, 2 to 3 hours)
This is the route most visitors picture when they think of Madrid by bike. It starts in the city centre, winds past the Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral, loops through Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol, then heads into Retiro Park. The surface is mostly smooth pavement. Traffic is light in the morning, and the shade in Retiro is welcome by midday. Perfect for first-time visitors or anyone who wants the postcard version of Madrid.
You can ride this route yourself or join our Highlights Bike Tour, where a local guide adds the stories behind each landmark.
Madrid Rio Riverside Trail (Easy to Moderate, 1.5 to 4 hours)
The Madrid Rio park runs along the Manzanares river and offers one of the most relaxed rides in the city. The path is wide, car-free, and lined with playgrounds, gardens, and footbridges. You can ride for thirty minutes or three hours without ever touching a road. Locals use it for jogging and dog walking, so the pace here is slow and social. Families with kids love this route because there are fountains, sandpits, and ice cream stands every few hundred metres.
Casa de Campo Nature Loop (Moderate, 2 to 3 hours)
Casa de Campo is Madrid’s largest park and it feels like countryside inside the city. The trails here are dirt and gravel in places, which makes them more suited to confident riders or e-bikes. You will pass the lake, the zoo, and thick pine forest. The elevation is gentle but constant, so this route gives you more of a workout than the city centre without being exhausting.
If you want to explore this area with a guide, our Private Green Bike Tour covers the best of Madrid’s parks and green spaces.
The Green Tour: Parks and Gardens (Easy, 2 hours)
If you prefer trees to traffic lights, this route strings together Retiro Park, the Royal Botanical Garden, and the quieter corners of Salamanca. It is mostly flat, heavily shaded, and full of benches. A great option for older riders or anyone recovering from a long flight.
Night Rides Along Gran Via (Easy, 1 hour)
Gran Via is Madrid’s most famous street, and it transforms at night. The buildings light up, the traffic drops, and the wide lanes feel almost cinematic. This is a short route best done after dinner, just to soak in the atmosphere. We offer occasional night tours in summer; ask at the shop if you are interested.
Pick a route that sounds fun, not ambitious. Madrid rewards a slow pace. If you are not sure where to start, the Highlights Bike Tour covers the Classic Loop with a guide who knows every shortcut and photo spot.
