What to Wear on a Madrid Bike Tour: A Practical Guide

Getting dressed for a bike tour sounds simple until you are halfway through a ride and realize jeans were a mistake. Madrid’s climate and flat terrain make biking easy, but the right clothing makes it even better.

Footwear matters most

Closed-toe shoes are non-negotiable. Sandals and flip-flops slip on pedals and offer zero protection if your foot slips. Trainers, walking shoes, or any flat-soled sneaker work perfectly. Avoid heavy boots; they weigh down your pedalling and overheat quickly in the sun.

Bottoms that move with you

Jeans chafe after twenty minutes on a saddle. Shorts, leggings, or joggers are the smarter choice. In summer, lightweight shorts with a bit of stretch keep you cool. In winter, layer a pair of light joggers under a windbreaker and you are set.

Tops and layers

Madrid gets hot from May through September. A breathable t-shirt or tank top with sunscreen is usually enough. In spring and autumn, mornings start cool then warm up fast. A light zip-up fleece or long-sleeve shirt you can peel off mid-ride is ideal. Winter riders rarely need heavy coats; a thermal base layer plus a windproof jacket does the job.
